Steve doesn't fit the traditional mold of what a bike builder might look like - conservative, quiet, unassuming. And that's the way he likes it. Low profile and humble with a focus on what's really important - a superior build, quality work and ultimate customer satsifaction. He takes the grandiose dreams of others and creates real, tangible things. For him, it's always been about the passion for motorcycles and that dream led him to develop advanced fabrication and sophisticated motorcycle technology. His specialized engineering skills have earned the respect of other builders and has been invited to collaborate on their custom builds.

  • Began building model airplanes, cars, ships, motorcycles and spacecraft from age six

  • By age ten, the trend was for kids to extend the forks on their bicycles. He began 'chopping' bicycles to mimic the motorcycle seen in the epic film, " Easy Rider"

  • By age 11, he caught the riding bug and learned to ride motocross

  • At 15, he bought his first car, a 1972 Plymouth Cuda. After experiementing with several different engine and transmission combinations, including a dual quad 440 and dual quad 426 Hemi, he went on to develop many sophisticated, custom supercharger systems for hot rods and race cars

  • Graduated from George Brown College with a 4.0 GPA in Tool + Die and Mechanical Engineering, with a letter of congratulations from the Dean

  • Started working in the tool + die field at his father's shop, Karta Tool & Die, in 1976. He built it in to a highly successful shop with an impeccable reputation for stellar work and going the extra mile for his manufacturer clients. He eventually took it over in 1999

  • Because his workmanship is so precise, he began developing a line of custom target rifles, a belt action and semi automatic .50 BMG that were later used to win 1000 yard competitions in Canada and the US

  • Opened Industrial Custom Cycle, which was later renamed Schuller Cyclewerks

  • In 2004, Steve built an all aluminum custom chopper "Speeding Billet" that quickly got the Schuller name known across the world for building the first, all billet 7075 aluminum custom chassis. He did not use a CNC machine in the construction of this motorcycle except for the wheels. The bike would go on to win countless shows and magazines all over the world. Read more about Speeding Billet here

  • Regarded as the preferred Canadian curator of infamous, collectable motorcycles built by Matt Hotch, Jesse James, Indian Larry and Billy Lane such as V-Lux, Love Zombie, MissTreated, Money Shot, Psycho Billy Cadillac and Grindhouse . Steve has worked on more of these bikes than any other builder worldwide. Because of his precise workmanship, he is the trusted source to restore, rebuild and maintain each bike to respectfully preserve the original design of these legendary works of art and to maintain their pedigree.

  • Commissioned by a private collector to build a tribute bike similar to Jesse James infamous copper bike, "Penny Saved", which was not available for sale at the time. The tribute bike was constructed in a slightly more bobber-style with each piece fabricated and custom built to precision

  • Currently commissioned to develop and engineer new hubless wheel technology for a double hubless project in the US

  • He specializes in engineering new and challenging designs for motorcycles and often collaborates with other builders in North America to assist in their complex design projects

Joe's accomplishments as a fabricator, builder, designer and mechanical troubleshooter are widely known in the world of custom motorcycles. His die-hard passion for riding compels him to ride every day, in all kinds of weather. In fact, in one riding season his newly built bobber (see Gallery) racked up 15,000 kilometers. 2700 kilometers alone were spent riding for four days in a round-trip to Tennessee. In his downtime, Joe enjoys racing his own bike for fun at Grand Bend Motor Speedway. He has an impressive background and legendary reputation in the racing and high performance car arenas. Joe's true genius, however, is building things, solving problems, His life is dedicated to it.

  • Joe started building both race cars and hot rods full time in 1977 in Montreal

  • A major influence at this time was Dave Cody with whom he was lucky enough to share  a shop for many years

  • In the same year, Joe built a concept car called La Poly 1 alongside engineering students from L’École Polytechnique de Montréal

  • While in Montreal, Joe raced a number of Dragsters, as well as Frank Marino’s Pro Stock car

  • When he wasn’t driving race cars, Joe worked on many drag race teams including Pro Stock, Pro Mod, Alcohol Funny Cars

  • Drag racing was and still is a passion of his

  • After moving to Toronto Joe worked with Competition Automotive on special creative projects such as stunt cars and props for movies and television, a Pitts Aerobatic Airplane, a hot air balloon and recreated  a 1950s British sports car

  • Later on, Joe worked for years as Head Fabricator for Motion Concept Vehicles, where he worked on a Supercar known as the MCV prototype, as well as a Formula 1 car for a Ford  television commercial

  • Following that, Joe worked at StyleMaster Custom Motorcycles as the Head Fabricator building custom one of a kind motorcycles

  • In more recent years, Joe has worked alone to design and build a small low emission taxi prototype to be used overseas in over-populated, over-polluted living conditions

  • Other interesting vehicles include vintage classics, including Ferrari, Bugatti, McLaren, etc.

  • Joe recalls one of his most recent projects, a custom built bike (with sheet metal) made of copper as both a favourite of his, as well as one of his most challenging ventures to date.

  • When faced with a challenge, without the proper tools, Joe is sometimes forced to make his own metal-forming tools (English wheel, planishing hammer, etc.)

  • Joe is able to see a project in completion before he has even started working on it, and has always said “the project talks to me as I am building it!”

  • In his opinion, a runner up for one of the coolest things he has done the Formula SAE race car where he worked alongside his grandson, a student at L’École Polytechnique de Montréal and his fellow classmates

  • Has won many Best Appearing Car awards at major NHRA race events

  • In a bind, Joe once used cooking oil as cutting fluid in his daughters kitchen while repairing another grandson’s scooter cylinder head

  • Joe loves creating anything out of metal. This includes tanks, fenders, pipes, tools, etc. but does not stop at automotive engineering.  Joe has even made metal furniture for his living room (clear coated raw steel) as well as commissioned pieces such as bedroom sets

  • One thing he would love to do is continue his work on a larger scope of musical instruments after dabbling with a guitar made of copper sheet metal

  • To his admission, Joe’s favourite car he ever drove was a McLaren F1 street car due to its rarity; 1 of only 60

  • Joe is currently enjoying a scenic daily 2hr/day commute (on his bike) to his new endeavor which is working on a twin Chevy powered airplane
